These open models are absorbing nearly a third of AI requests on Vercel, handling volume-heavy infrastructure for AI apps while closed models serve as a premium layer. Half of Fortune 500 firms are reportedly using Hugging Face to deploy their own private and open-source models, driven by cost and control benefits over black-box APIs.
The shift to open-weight models, particularly from China, is fragmenting AI compute demand, reducing lock-in for enterprises and increasing demand for flexible, customizable infrastructure.
