The gap between proprietary and open-source AI models has narrowed to 1-3 months, with open models rapidly gaining capabilities. Chinese labs, previously 5-8 months behind, face challenges in training and serving 10T models at the monthly cadence of American frontier labs. Future model gains are expected to come primarily from monthly RL post-training improvements rather than single generational pre-training leaps.
